Hello,
Could someone please answer a couple questions about
this game for me.

1. Is there any way to refill the canteen while out and
how?

2. Is there any way to fix items while out in the field or
is it only when you are at home base?

3. When I was out in the field I kept getting the message
"reserve supply" or "reserve something" every time I
moved a man but I was still able to continue if I told
him to continue. What does this mean?

4. I found a item that said "useless" but it said 1% on
the graph. Is this really useless or is it fixable?

Thanks.

Any fixable item can be repaired. This includes grenades and exposives. But
usually I don't fix 1% grenades. A mech like Speck who has 114% fixing will
only be able to fix a little more than one grenade in a day (99% for the
grenade and 15% left for other items). You don't really need grenades so much
that it would be practical to fix them.

While we're on the subject of grenades, does anyone have a definite
successful strategy for using them? What good are they? In X-Com, you can
take out 3+ aliens using grenades sometimes, but in JA it seems like you have
to throw the grenades right at your target to be successful. Can they
be thrown over trees or buildings? I've never tried.

Nope. Speck has brought some grenades back from the dead. Of course, its about
the only thing he fixed that day.

YES, you can throw it over trees. But not over buildings ( do you mean
this 'buildings' a wall? ). I have explain most of the effect of these
different Grenades in my note. If you still have problem in understanding
that writing ( I know my English is not good ). You can e-mail me, and
I will explain it more detailly.

You've got reserve turned on. This means, the program automatically
reserves enough action points for the merc to use his weapon. This comes
in really useful during the enemy turn. If an enemy comes into view and
the merc who sees him has enough action points left, the merc can a shot
off, throw a grenade, duck, etc ...
To turn this off (wouldn't recommend it), right click on the merc's picture
and click on the "reserve" button.

>4. I found a item that said "useless" but it said 1% on

Give it to Speck back at base. It's fixable. "Useless" refers to its
current condition - if it's a gun there's no chance it will fire, etc...

It means that you're reserving time units to take a shot. By
right-clicking (?) on the merc's picture, you get to customize
three things: reserve time units, max aim, and mute. This
should be explained in the manual.

I was always under the impression that you can still fix
useless items. I don't know that I've actually tried, though.
Are you not able to fix useless items?

I have this hut with a guy who's padlocked himself into a room, and I can't blow the door down,

If that is a "metal" according to your description, then you can
try throwing the grenade into the door like a "rock". The door will
not open, but the effect of explosion is still there. Just remember
one thing: the closer the bad guy to the door, the better the effect.
Use someone with "Extended Ears" to determine the position of that
bad guy, then throw the grenade ( of course, move your own guy first )
when he/she hears a "Definite Movement".

Li

PS: The tactics of using Grenades ( all four kinds ) depends on your
own experience. Try different Grenades in different situation to
see the effect of each one.

I have not been able to toss grenades into windows, but if you have your
explosives expert put a bomb in window, it falls inside. The Eagle
Silencer stun bomb is nice for this.

Also, I have used explosives (it may well have been C4) to blow away
walls. Of course, you run the risk of destroying something important on
the other side...

I have also gotten redshirts to move around in a room by pelting the
outside wall with rocks. Elio really earned his paycheck that day ;]

The best thing to do with useless or near-useless grenades is to put
them into an Eagle weapon (Fearball, Silencer, Dog, etc.) If you have
your explosives guy assemble the Eagle, it'll be created at 70% or 80%
condition, even if you used a useless grenade. It's more productive
than throwing them away.

Which sector? I think the only crates Ivan could not open were rather late
in the game. Maybe Ivan did not have a full health bar?
The first crate I encountered (almost) nobody could open was in S44, if I
remember correctly. I think I had Scully open it.

The key to the north door in Brenda's lab is hidden in a coat which hangs
in the small building to the northwest (S28). You can only open metal doors
with explosives (I often use the explosive on the wall next to the door,
which will always work (except S1), so I get a bigger opening) or with the
proper key (never tried crowbar on them, though).

In this sector, I used explosives on the west-wall of the room.
Are you sure the explosives exploded? In V1.0, the explosives sometimes don't
explode after they stop ticking, this is fixed in V1.1. But I have never
had any trouble (in V1.1) to blow away walls with explosives.

I (almost) never use keys, they take too much inventory space, and it's too
dangerous most of the time. Either use grenades, explosives, gunshots, or
if you are rather certain there is no on behind, use lockpick with skilled
guys (try to set them to repair to see how good they are and you will realize
that Vinny is rather bad compared to Speck and Sparky)
There are some doors that can't even be opened by Magic, but Mike is able to
pick any locked door on the island (I did not find any he could not).

There are a few crates that I just had to give up on completely! Ivan can
usually open most crates with his trusty crowbar, but a few he couldn't

The crowbar was around 95% also, I have no clue...

What is with the locked doors? I have been completely unable to open the

padlocked door at Brenda's research lab. I have tried a padlock key that
I found (in a nearby sector), a crowbar(which has worked on a few doors),
Vinny and his trusty lockpick kit, grenades thrown at the door, and
regular keys, all to no avail!!

The same thing also goes for the one locked door inside the building

I forget exactly which sector, but it was one of the ones along the east

I figured out what I did wrong here also: I put the explosives on the

able to pick this door the second time I tried that sector...

Yeah, I am getting turned off towards keys, and I never bring them on
missions anymore. I only use them in the sector I found them now,
because they never seem to work anywhere else, and if they do, Vinny
could pick the door anyway. Vinny's picking ability my not be as good as
some, but he has turned out to be a pretty decent team member, and a
fairly good bargain for me. I can't afford Mike yet, or Magic, and have
not tried Sparky. Speck always stays home to repair equipment for me,
and he can't shoot worth beans anyway.

ONE QUESTION:

Is it true that the extra crates will never show up in one of the Stork
delivery sectors (such as 36) if you already hold that sector prior to
the drop off date?

An update on Elio: He now has about 7 kills! :)
I just try to get him in as close as possible with his .38, and let him
plug away. He also draws much of the fire as my other team members sneak

He is even more useful when he is dead, meaning that the next guide
,Hamous, is a much more effective zero-cost body with a 73 marksmanship
rating.

Happy JAing.

Agreed! Hamous is excellent with a rifle or better with a sight.
I was sorry to lose him near the end

Well, Elio got killed a few days back, but I got Magic right away. I am
up to day 18 and I am not really having any money problems, so I thought
it was time to try him out. He has been really great, and I don't regret
paying him his salary, at least not yet. :)

One question though: How do you use Camoflague Kits?

I have not been able to figure this one out. Do you use them in the
field, or at home at the beginning of the day? And what do you DO to use
them?

Steve:
Since you saw the mini FAQ and still can not figure out how to
use it. I think this is my fault. I will try to explain it more detailly
in next version.

To use the Camo-U-Falgue, you just need to put it in the body
part just as a Canteen. That will show you something ( I don't know
what is that English word ) you usually saw it in a combat movie or
TV show. It will last about 2 days. When the merc has this, he/she
will probably less likely to be spotted. Also, the enemy is likely to
miss when shooting at him/her.

All you have to do to use Camouflage kits is to hold them with your mouse cursor
in the inventory screen and click over the mercs chest. Its just like the canteens.

Just pick one up with the mouse and click it on the chest area
in someones inventory screen.

If that wasn't clear: Go to inventory mode. Click on the Camoflague
Kit then while you have it as a cursor click your mercs vest. The vest
silhoutte should be camoflagued.

BTW, what do you use rocks for? Are the rocks just used as an
object to throw or can you combine them with some other item?
